Cicada Killers
These solitary wasps are noticed by the burrowing holes they
construct in order to host their young. The females first mate with, then kill, the drone (male). After this event has taken place, they burrow a hole in the earth, lay
a single egg in a recently-captured and stung (but not to death)
cicada. The young then goes through its four stage metamorphosis.
At the second larval stage, the critter starts eating its
breakfast and then quickly pupates (or cocoons). A week or two
later, out comes a new one. In addition, you will have the
generational offspring of that one in your garden next year!
Extermination cost: $80.00 to $200.00, depending on the size and
generational depth of the pest assessment.
